There are many advantages to vacation home rentals. For one, you can choose your style of accommodation, whether it´s condos, villas or beach houses. For another, they also offer you more choices in location...in the city, in a fishing village, or away from it all, on a quiet stretch of beach. And, they offer savings over a stay in a hotel. This is especially true for the Gulf coast of Mexico, in contrast to the high prices that are now common in Cancun and along the Caribbean side of the Yucatan Peninsula.
For the real bargain hunters, there are some simple (hence cheaper) yet comfortable, lower priced options. However, if you prefer a luxury villa, you can still save money. Meals can be prepared in the comfort of your own 'home' instead of always having to pay the costs of eating out, thus allowing you to relax and enjoy all of the amenities that are available to you. If you already know people in the area, or if you make new friends, it's easy to entertain them when you're staying in a vacation rental. You may decide on an oceanfront condo, or if it's privacy that you want, nothing is better than a beach house getaway.
So why choose Yucatán? Perhaps most importantly, because Yucatán enjoys the reputation of being the safest state in Mexico. Also, the Yucatecos, or people of Yucatán, are famously friendly. Add to that, the fact that the east coast of the Yucatán Peninsula has become heavily commercialized in recent years, so if you´re looking for some time in the "real" Mexico, the Gulf coast is for you. Here, you can still find miles of secluded, untouched beaches, or you can tour colonial cities like Mérida and Izamal, or ancient Mayan cities like Uxmal and Dzibilchaltun, all within a couple hours´ driving time. You can go fishing in the Gulf, swimming in the fresh water cenotes, or you can just relax and swing in your hammock. The culture is diverse, as is the food, since they combine influences from the traditional Maya to the Spanish conquistadors.
In short, a vacation home rental on the beautiful Gulf coast of Mexico can make for an unforgettable vacation, or even better, a long term stay.
